Young Patriot

June 21, 2013

Dear Editor,

On June 13, 2013, at the Farmers’ Market in Broken Bow, I witnessed one of the most touching incidents I have seen in a long time. One of the vendors was displaying an American flag at her spot in the park. A young boy with his Grandma were shopping and as he approached the flag, he paused, lowered his head and proceeded to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance” verbatim!! I was nearly moved to tears!! Oh what a moment to capture if I had only had a camera.

Reader applauds choice for Fair Grounds Manager

April 26, 2013

To the Custer County Ag Society ...

First of all-kudos to you all for making a great choice in a fairgrounds manager. I regret that I am unable to attend your meeting, due to prior commitments with my family, but I wanted to voice my support for what he has done so far.

Thank you Sylvester's!

April 8, 2013

Dear Custer County:
WOW! What a treasure we have in Jeannie and Fred at Sylvester’s in Broken Bow. In the past eight years they have been able to give away tens of thousands of dollars to countless programs involving our youth. Speaking as president of the PTA, I thank them for donating $15,967.36 this year to the Little Feet, Big Dreams campaign to raise money for some much needed playground equipment at North Park Elementary. As a parent, I thank them for continuing to fight for our children.

Birth of a new tradition

November 10, 2011

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor.
This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans.
There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Wanted - A few good men and a few good horses

October 13, 2011

Dear Editor,
I was just thinking the other day, that with the turmoil in the U.S. Postal System, I might have a partial solution, at least as far as Nebraska is concerned.
If the Post Office is seriously gonna drop the Grand Island and North Platte Sorting Centers, that could mean three day service for first class mail.

Roads Funding Advances

April 22, 2011

By Deb Fischer, Senator
District 43

LB 84, my roads funding bill, advanced to Final Reading on
April 20th with a strong vote of 36-12. The bill, as amended,
designates a quarter cent of existing sales tax to this new State
Highway and Capital Improvement Fund. LB 84 is a solution to our
transportation funding crisis that is reasonable and workable. It makes
a good start in addressing some of the highway funding needs of our
state. The bill also helps our local governments and provides aid to
other regional projects. Cities and counties will receive 15% of the

NASCAR & corn farmers will make history at Daytona

February 17, 2011

Sunday, February 20 is a historic day as NASCAR begins using E15, a 15 percent corn ethanol blend, as its racing fuel. Late last year, NASCAR announced it would be switching to corn-based ethanol under the name Sunoco Green E15 for all three of its national racing series, including the Sprint Cup Series that kicks off with the Daytona 500.

Advice for nonprofits from IRS

October 7, 2010

Dear Editor:
We at the Internal Revenue Service are concerned because more than 2200 small community-based nonprofits in Nebraska are in jeopardy of losing their tax-exempt status. The loss of this status could greatly impact the organizations' charitable work and their donors' potential tax deductions.
