Volunteer fire fighters come through

In large rural states like Nebraska, we depend heavily on volunteer firefighters to protect our homes and property. These are very special people who deserve our gratitude and respect because of their selfless devotion to a part time job that requires extensive training and doesn’t pay anything.

One of my all-time favorite songs, the classic by Aretha Frankin, sums it up : “R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.”
Back in the 1980s a comedian named Rodney Dangerfield made his mark on the world with a simple one-liner: “I just don’t get no respect. . . none at all!”
I had a conversation with a teenager a couple of years ago, during which she made a comment that took me by surprise: “I am not going to respect my teachers, or any other adults, just because they are older than me. They have to earn my respect.”

Without ethics, we in the newspaper industry, are nothing!

Some not so good news hit my desk at the end of last week. When word comes that one of our own, broke a moral code we live by ... it hits home, and it hits home hard.
This week, a former Custer County Chief publisher, Jon Flatland, was exposed as a serial plagiarist. To me, that is nothing short of fraud. The article on the front page tells it like it is. And because he was involved at this newspaper, the very newspaper where my roots run deep, I find myself bewildered, disgusted, and offended.

‘Kids Count’ a good read, but it’s not pretty

There is a report each year issued by ‘Voices for Children in Nebraska’ called ‘Kids Count,’ that is worthy of serious study.
This is one report that always makes me sit back and frankly, nearly gasp. Of all of our jobs as people, as adults, as parents, the raising of our children is the most critical. And raising children in today’s society doesn’t make it easy.

It's more than touchdowns

With a gigantic thud, Tebowmania is no more.
It’s unfortunate, because it was simply awesome.
I know many football fans and various groups of people are probably saying something like this: “Good, I’m sick of Tebow.”
There are two different types of Tebow detractors: the football detractors, whom I respect, and the agnostics and atheists that can’t stand his public (and rightful) display of Christianity.
I can stand the football-only detractors.

Let’s be proactive, and stop fatalities before they happen!

At the newspaper we try very hard to be proactive rather than reactive. It isn’t always easy to do, especially in the world of news and journalism, but it is a goal we try to achieve nonetheless.
I have a strong family history of cancer. Therefore, I work hard to be proactive with my health rather than reactive. I have my regular check-ups, no matter how unpleasant they may be, and I watch closely for signs that something may not be quite right.

The first weeks of school have come and gone ever so slowly. Teachers have made their final decisions about which students are going to pass and which ones will not. In the hallways the drama is unfolding, friends are reconnecting, students running back and forth for the assignment they “left in their locker.” And before I begin with the rest of my columns, I’d like to give a short recognition to my teachers who have put up with me for all this years.

State Senator and Republican U.S. Senate candidate Deb Fischer criticized the decision of the Obama Administration to bypass the will of the people in New Hampshire and directly fund local operations of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider.

Terrorists strike U.S. - - Unlike so many we were survivors

On Sept. 11, 2001, a terrorist attack was made on the United States and the impact of the act is still reeling its toll.
Has it honestly been 10 Years? Was it really 10 years ago when on that Tuesday morning we threw out what we had planned for that week’s paper and set out to talk to our readers. We knew our readers were consumed by it, because we too were consumed.
The flags flew at half mast and the line to the pumps extended for blocks. The National Guard detachment stationed out of Broken Bow was placed on alert.
