Nebraska returner Pierson-El stars on offense too

October 19, 2014

Nebraska's De'Mornay Pierson-El quickly established his reputation as one of the nation's top punt returners.

This freshman can do more than special teams.

Knowing that Pierson-El has returned two punts for touchdowns, Northwestern mostly kicked away from him Saturday. That didn't stop him from hurting the Wildcats in other ways in the Cornhuskers' 38-17 road victory.

No. 19 Nebraska 38, Northwestern 17. Northwestern loses 38-17 to Abdullah

October 19, 2014

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Justin Jackson got off to a fast start, and Northwestern looked ready to avenge its heartbreaking loss to Nebraska from a year ago.

Then Ameer Abdullah got going in the second half, and the Wildcats fell apart.

Northwestern managed just 28 yards in the final two quarters and Abdullah had three of his four 1-yard touchdown runs in the second half, helping the 19th-ranked Cornhuskers roll to a 38-17 victory on Saturday night.

Huskers, Northwestern brace for another tight game

October 17, 2014

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — The last time Nebraska played at Northwestern two years ago, so many Cornhuskers fans packed the stadium that the home team had to go to a silent count on offense.

Coach Bo Pelini wouldn't be shocked if a similar scenario unfolds again.

No. 19 Nebraska visits Northwestern in a game that matches two teams that played absolute thrillers the previous three years. They also are trying to keep pace in the Big Ten West race, and Pelini wouldn't be surprised if the Cornhuskers got another assist from their fans.

October 15, 2014

AMOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) — A former NFL star and his mother will go to trial next year in a mortgage fraud case after they turned down plea deals that called for state prison terms.

Irving Fryar and Allene McGhee rejected the deals Tuesday during a state Superior Court hearing. They're charged with conspiring to steal money through a mortgage scam run by William Barksdale, who has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison.

Their trial is scheduled to start Feb. 3.

Westerkamp leading Nebraska's receivers with style

October 14, 2014

ALINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — It's a good thing for Nebraska that Jordan Westerkamp ultimately chose football over ice cream.

The little boy who grew up to become the Cornhuskers' mustachioed master of the circus catch wasn't sure the sport was for him when he showed up at a suburban Chicago park for the first practice with his third-grade team.

The kids were in the middle of a drill when Jordan went to the sideline feigning illness. In reality, he couldn't resist the siren song of the ice cream truck rolling by on a 98-degree afternoon.

Mountain lion harvested in northern Nebraska

October 7, 2014

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A mountain lion has been harvested in northern Nebraska.

The state Game and Parks Commission says the 157-pound male mountain lion was harvested Sunday in Knox County near Lewis and Clark Lake. It marks the first mountain lion harvested in the Prairie Unit since it opened in January.

Mountain lion hunting in the unit is open until the end of the year. All other mountain lion units are currently closed.
