Stateside mission - Guard troops sent to Gulf

    Det. 1 of the National Guard 1074th Transportation Co., based in Broken Bow, left Tuesday morning on a short-term mission to the Gulf Coast region. The troops will assist in recovery efforts following the landfall of Hurricane Gustav in the region. They will join about 13,000 troops from across the U.S. in the recovery project.

    Broken Bow’s soldiers left Tuesday to assist with recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast.
    The region was hit with a Category 2 Hurricane, named Gustav, Sunday.
    The National Guard Unit, Det. 1 of the 1074th Transportation Co., based in Broken Bow, received orders Sunday to join recovery work in Louisiana.
    “ A lot of them join to do just this sort of thing, to help their fellow Americans,” said Sgt. Tim McCaslin.

    BURWELL --  A Labor Day weekend camping trip turned tragic for a northeast Nebraska family on Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area.
    The body of a Battle Creek girl was found late Monday evening after approximately 30 hours of searching by state and local officials at the Calamus Reservoir near Burwell.
    Dakota Moler, age 14, was last seen swimming with friends Sunday afternoon when she disappeared in the choppy waters west of the Homestead Knolls boat ramp.

Snake bite doesn’t rattle Berwyn farmer

ImageKirk Foster hopped back on his bike and rode two miles back to his house after being struck by a rattlesnake in a ditch while checking rain gauges. He spent four days in the hospital.

    BERWYN -- Kirk Foster’s family has made just a few adjustments since being bitten by a rattlesnake last month.
    They mow the grass around the house a little shorter. He keeps a more watchful eye when he is out on his property. And they got a set of snake guards for 13-year-old daughter, Kelsey, to wear when she is out helping him.
