Arthur Bendig, age 81 of Kearney (formerly of Fremont), died Feb. 26, 2012, at Mt. Carmel Nursing Home after a long battle with diabetes. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m. at O'Brien-Straatmann-Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney with the Rev. Dean Pofahl officiating.Memorials are suggested to the family. Arthur was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Bonesteel, S.D. to Paul Bendig and Vera (Ott) Bendig of Naper. Arthur graduated from 8th grade in Boyd County in 1943. After 8th grade he started working for various farmers and later started working for Hormel's in Fremont for 35 years. Upon retiring he worked various part-time jobs.
From a previous marriage he had a son, Arthur James Bendig of Fremont. He was united in marriage to Marilyn (Saner) and made their home in Fontanelle. To this union four children were born, one son and three daughters.
They eventually parted and Arthur met and married Charlene Garner June 10, 1989, in Fremont. He spent the rest of his life with Charlene. Arthur was a superb gardener and griller and was an expert card player who also loved to hunt and fish. He also liked to hunt mushrooms with his kids and have barbeques every weekend with family.
He and Charlene also enjoyed attending auctions and spending time with family as much as possible and traveling to the Sandhills. Arthur made friends wherever he went and was not a stranger to anyone. He served his country for six years as a medic in the National Guard, and was proud to be an American.
Arthur is survived by his children, Arthur James Bendig of Fremont, James Bendig and wife Mary of Oregon, John Bendig and wife Lynette, Alvin Bendig, and Robert Bendig and wife Linda all of Fremont, David Bendig of Fremont and his children Dustin Sorenson, James Stonehocker, Travis, Kelly, Ashley, and Brittany. Lori Cranwell and husband Craig of Broken Bow, son Bryan and daughters Shelby, Angie Paladino and husband Luke of Papillion, Karen Swisher and husband Jim, their children Trent, Tyler, Courtney and Nicole of Halsey, Teresa Stadler and husband Dickie of Axtell and children Marissa, Quinton, and Garrett, and many great-grandchildren; brothers, Marvin and wife Mitch of Great Falls, Mont., Herman and wife Grace of Naper, Raymond Bendig of Des Moines, Iowa; sisters, Ethel Stahlecker of Fontanelle, Lorraine and husband Robert Woehl of Fremont, Florence (Betsy) and husband Bill Rogero of San Mateo, Fla., Margarette and husband Dave Heien of Spencer, and Alma and husband Richard Tiernen of Ankeny, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Charlene; father, Paul Bendig; mother, Vera; infant brother, Leslie; brothers, Albert, Walter, and Lennard.
Burial will be arranged by the funeral home in Newport, Nebr.
