Arthur Grint, 91

January 10, 2014

Arthur Howard Grint, son of Harold A. and Helen (Finley) Grint, was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Sargent. He died Dec. 21, 2013, in Cerritos, Calif., at the age of 91 years 11 months.
Arthur was born in a sod house east of Sargent. He grew up on a farm and attended Phillipsburg Country School, graduating from Sargent High School in 1940. Following high school he enlisted and served in the Navy from 1942-1945, during WWII, where he learned to fly and served as an Aviation Radioman, 3rd class, on the ship U.S.S. Takanis Bay. He flew on many bomber flights during his time in the service and was honored in receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Arthur married Thelma A. Skelton of Broken Bow, in 1950, and began farming east of Sargent where he started a family with the birth of his two daughters, Alana Marie and Della Ione. Wanting a better life for his family he moved to Long Beach, Calif., in 1957, where another child was added to his family with the birth of his son, William Harold, a few years later.
In California he worked for Shell Oil at a refinery in Wilmington until his retirement in 1980, when he moved back to Sargent. In retirement Arthur enjoyed walking to town every day, working on old radios, watching movies, listening to old-time country music, visiting Comstock Park every 4th of July, and feeding his many stray cats. Most people he crossed paths with considered him a friend.
Arthur recently moved back to California (in 2011) to live with his eldest daughter, Alana Walton, where he enjoyed warmer weather, walks in the neighborhood, family outings, and swap meet shopping.
Arthur was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and Elks.
Arthur was a great source of historical information for the small town of Sargent. He loved country music, dancing, and garage sale/swap meet shopping. His famous departing salutation for his family was always, “See you in the movies!” He will be greatly missed!
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Grint; wife, Sue Hohman, and brother Norman Grint.
He is survived by daughters, Alana and husband Tim Walton of Cerritos, Calif., and Della Pulley of Sargent; son, Bill Grint and wife Charito of Lakewood, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services and interment in Mount Hope Cemetery of Sargent will take place at a later date.
