Bow Juniors fall to Cozad; season ends
McCOOK--The Broken Bow Junior Baseball team saw their 2011 season come to an end at the B- 6 Area Tournament in McCook this past Saturday. In a game that was a microcosm of their season, errors and mistakes cost Broken Bow and they fell to Cozad 23-2. Cozad quickly scored twice in the top of the first inning and Broken Bow left a runner stranded on second base in the bottom of the first. In the second inning both teams were held scoreless. Cozad pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the third inning and Broken Bow was held scoreless producing a score of 5-0 after three innings. Cozad then blew the game open in the fourth inning and scored seven runs. Broken Bow again was held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning and was looking at a 12-0 deficit after four innings. Broken Bow was able to score twice in the top of the fifth inning but Cozad exploded for 11 runs and the game ended on the mercy rule. Taking the loss for Broken Bow was Preston Sanchez. Sanchez pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed four hits, 11 runs and three walks and struck out three. Zack Sanchez replaced him and he allowed three hits, 12 runs and five walks. Jordan Lemburg led the Broken Bow offense batting 1-1 with a double. Garrett Ulmer batted 1-2 with a double and scored a run. Jake McCormick also added a run. Broken Bow faced Gothenburg in the first round of the loser’s bracket. Broken Bow was able to send Gothenburg home for the season with a 10-8 win. Broken Bow scored one run in the top of the first and held Gothenburg scoreless and led 1-0 after one inning of play. After holding Broken Bow scoreless in the second inning Gothenburg was able to score twice and led 2-1 after two innings. Broken Bow added two runs in the third and Gothenburg scored once tying the game 3-3 after three innings. Broken Bow opened the game up in the fourth inning and scored six runs. The offensive explosion was highlighted by Jake McCormick’s two-run home run. Broken Bow held Gothenburg scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning and took a commanding 9-3 lead after four innings. Gothenburg added a run in the fifth and Broken Bow scored once in the sixth. With Broken Bow leading 10-4 Gothenburg attempted a late rally but Broken Bow held the Melons off and came away with the victory. Seth Quackenbush earned the win for Broken Bow. Quackenbush pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed five hits and six runs. Jack Smallcomb closed out the game for Broken Bow. Smallcomb pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowed two hits, one run and one walk. McCormick led the way for the Broken Bow offense. McCormick batted 2-4, batted in four runs, scored once and hit a home run. Preston Sanchez batted a perfect 3-3, batted one run in and scored twice. Ulmer batted 2-4 and batted in two runs. Broken Bow was matched up with Minden in the first round of the B-6 Area Tournament. Minden proved why they are the leagues number one seed and easily won 11-1 after five innings. Minden scored twice in the first inning, three times in the second and third inning and three times in the fourth inning. Preston Sanchez was the losing pitcher in the effort. Sanchez pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowed six hits, seven runs and four walks and struck out two. Jack Smallcomb replaced Sanchez and he pitched 2/1/3 innings, allowed five hits, four runs and one walk and struck out four. Zach Sanchez led the way for the Broken Bow offense. Sanchez batted 3-3 and scored once. McCormick went 1-3 and batted one run in. Broken Bow ended their regular season with a 4-2 win over Wood River. Broken Bow scored twice in the second inning and once in the third and fourth inning and Wood River scored twice in the fifth inning. Quackenbush earned the win for Broken Bow. Quackenbush pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, one run and walked three and struck out three. Preston Sanchez closed out the game for Broken Bow. Sanchez pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowed one hit, one runs and two walks and struck out five. Sterling Atkins batted 1-3 and scored twice. Quackenbush went 1-3.
