Bow Residents Featured in NET News Program

October 11, 2012

Broken Bow residents Michael Steckler and Andra White asked questions and shared their opinions as part of the NET Television election year project "Voter Voices." Steckler talked about health care and White asked questions about immigration during a videotaped roundtable discussion at the Broken Bow Public Library last April. Their comments, along with others from across the state, are part of a new NET Television special "Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices," airing Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1/HD.

"Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices" features a collection of citizen perspectives and questions for Nebraska U.S. Senate candidates Deb Fischer (R) and Bob Kerrey (D) on a wide variety of issues -- including health care, immigration, the economy, agriculture, education and gun control. During the 60-minute program, NET News senior producer/reporter Mike Tobias talks to Fischer and Kerrey, with discussion prompted by "Voter Voices" videos that were recorded at public libraries and events across Nebraska, like the one attended by Steckler and White. "Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices" is an initiative launched in partnership with the Nebraska Library Commission to encourage citizens to share their voices on issues at stake in this year's election.

More than 30 public libraries across the state hosted "Voter Voices" stations that included a simple set-up of web cameras and a YouTube channel. A station is in operation at the Broken Bow Public Library located at 626 South D Street. It is available during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"It seems our citizens often feel removed from the election process. But take a few minutes, stop by our local library and record a question for the candidates or express an issue you feel they need to address. Library staff is always eager to assist you. Democracy's strength relies on an informed public and "Voter Voices" is a unique and valuable tool to help achieve that objective," said Joan Birnie, director of the Broken Bow Public Library.

"Voter Voices" recording continues through Election Day. Visit the project web site, netNebraska.org/votervoices, for more information about "Voter Voices" and details about participating libraries. Users can also watch other "Voter Voices" videos, as well as a video voter's guide featuring full discussions with each candidate arranged by topic.
"Campaign Connection 2012: Voter Voices" repeats on NET Television's NET1/HD on Sunday, Oct. 21, at noon and 9 p.m. CT and Monday, Oct. 22, at 10 pm CT. It repeats on NET2 World on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 9 p.m. CT; Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. CT; and Monday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. CT
