Callie McClendon, 85

Callie L. McClendon, 85 years of age, of rural Elwood, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.
Callie was born Aug. 25, 1927, in Oconto, the eldest of six children born to Henry Raymond and Helen Elizabeth “Nellie” (Newhouse) Martin. She received her education at Callaway, graduating from Callaway High School with the class of 1945.
In 1952, Callie moved to Indiana. She was employed by Metro Glass for more than 20 years.
December 10, 1966, she was united in marriage to Carlton McClendon. In 1977, the couple returned to Nebraska, where Callie was employed at Sperry-New Holland in Lexington. She was also employed at the Elwood Care Center dietary department and later she was employed by the Bertrand Senior Center for several years.
Callie enjoyed gardening, canning, hunting and fishing. She and Carlton enjoyed camping and visiting numerous states together throughout the years.
Besides her parents, Callie was preceded in death by two brothers, Wallace Martin and a brother in infancy; two sisters-in-law, Melba Martin and Rita Martin.
She is survived by her husband, Carlton; two brothers, Harry Martin of Nebraska and Fred Martin and his wife, Patsy of Elwood; one sister, Elaine Keiser and her husband, Bob of Gothenburg; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation as the family has chosen to honor Callie’s request for anatomical donation to the Nebraska Anatomical Board in Omaha.
A time for fellowship in Callie’s honor was held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at the Legion Hall in Elwood.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
