Chokecherries & BBQ highlight this weekend

May 31, 2013

There are always lots of interesting floats in the Sargent Chokecherry Jamoboree parade, set for Monday, June 3 at 7 p.m.

SARGENT - The Sargent Fair is almost as old as Sargent but actually started as a harvest celebration. As crops and harvests grew larger… the warm autumns seemed to grow shorter. This provoked the Fair’s change in schedule from an autumn to a summer event.
In the 1980s, where “out of the ordinary” became normal, the celebration needed an identity of it’s own, thus the worlds first and only Chokecherry Jamboree was born. Now you may find more Chokecherry events, but Sargent’s was the first!
The Chokecherry Jamboree was an event separate to the fair in its inception. However, the community’s desire for one larger festival quickly merged the two events. Along with the carnival the festival features Mud Drags, a Pit Spitting Contest, a Parade, entertainment, BBQ's & pancake feeds, and the Little Miss Chokecherry Pageant.
This year’s Chokecherry Jamboree is set for June 1-4, with the theme “Flashback of the 80s.” The parade will be Monday, June 3, at 7 p.m. down Main Street.
The crowning of Little Miss Chokecherry will get things started Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., followed by a drama production and boat races. The ever popular Chokecherry Pit Spitting contest in the park begins at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a BBQ Cookoff contest this year at 7 p.m. Sunday in the park.
Richard’s Amusement will be on the Midway Monday and Tuesday. Following the parade Monday evening will be a concert by the Sheila Greenland Band at 8 p.m. The festival will conclude Tuesday with a bbq in the park at 6 pm. and SWAT entertainment at 7:30 p.m.

OCONTO - Folks in central Nebraska who know bbq, know that the first Saturday in June - Oconto is the place to be.
Oconto’s “Blowin’ the Doors Off” BBQ Fundraiser is Saturday, June 1, and is sponsored by the Oconto Volunteer Fire Department. The competitive event will feature 11 grill masters who will not only compete for top honors, but also provide all-you-can-eat good cooking. Gates open at 5 p.m., and an on-site beer garden will serve ice cold drink from 5 p.m. till 1 a.m
Live entertainment during the BBQ begins at 5 p.m. with One Eyed Willie & the Boys, followed at 6:30 by South Loup Sunrise. Everyone is invited to stick around and dance the night away to Borderline from 9-1. There will also be a raffle for several prizes, including a Bubba BBQ Oven, Kindle Fire HD, and iPad Touch.
Tickets for the all-you-can-eat BBQ are $12 for adults, $6 for children 5-11, and under 5 are free. Tickets are abailable in advance from all Oconto Fire Department members or Eggleston Oil in Oconto, or may be purchased at the gate.
