Christmas Tree Cutting Permits Go On Sale Monday

Christmas tree cutting permits will go on sale beginning Monday, November 25 at both the Pine Ridge and Bessey Ranger Districts. The permits entitle the purchaser to harvest one ponderosa pine or eastern red cedar, up to 15 feet tall from selected areas in the Nebraska National Forest near Chadron and Halsey.

The permits cost $10.00 and are available at the following offices Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:

* Pine Ridge Office - 16524 Hwy. 385, approximately 3 miles south of Chadron
* Supervisor's Office - 125 N. Main Street in Chadron
* Bessey Office - 40637 River Loop Road near Halsey

Each permit includes cutting guidelines, travel recommendations and a free motorized vehicle user's map (MVUM) to show roads and trails open for the public to find their tree.

Only areas designated on the permit map are open to Christmas tree cutting. Areas excluded from cutting include all campgrounds, administration sites, National Recreation Areas, Research Natural Areas, and around Pine Ridge Job Corps.
