TAYLOR -- The Anselmo-Merna boys and Ansley girls basketball teams captured the tournament championships at the Loup County Post Holiday Tournament last weekend.
The Anselmo-Merna Coyotes began the new year with two wins, the first for the Coyotes this season.
In the first round, the Coyotes upset the favored Sargent Bulldogs 50-40.
After an even first quarter, the Coyotes dominated the second and third quarters outscoring the Bulldogs 33-11. The Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter scoring 17 points to the Coyotesâ€™ 6 but were unable to close on Anselmo-Mernaâ€™s lead.
â€śI was impressed by how our boys played tonight,â€ť said Anselmo-Merna head coach Paul Christen. â€śI was very proud to see them play their hearts out against a good team like Sargent.â€ť
The key to the game was shooting. The Coyotes made 19 of 43 field goals, 7 of 19 from behind the 3-point arc while Sargent shot 14 of 59, 6 of 33 from the 3-points arc.
â€śAnselmo-Merna shot very well from the outside and did a good job of handling our defensive pressure,â€ť said Sargent head coach Mike Kozeal. â€śWe did a good job of handling the ball committing only four turnovers and we won the rebounding battle as well, but our shooting was horrid from all areas.â€ť
Joseph Christen led the Coyotes in scoring with 21 points and had 15 rebounds followed by Cole Geiser with 11 and 14 rebounds, Trey Gilligan with 8 points, Tyler Evans 6, Gregory Christen 2 and Dusty Chandler 2.
The Bulldogs were led by Guy Fenske with 15 points followed by Casey Richards with 8, Ryan Mosier 7, Brady Sutton 3, Tyke Kozeal 2, Theo Williams 2, Ridge Horky 1, Lane Bennett 1 and Jack Gibbens 1.
In the championship game against the Loup County Wildcats, the Coyotes trailed 10-6 after the first quarter then gained momentum in the second quarter to take an 18-16 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Coyotes outscored the Wildcats 30-17 giving them the 48-33 championship victory.
â€śI was so proud of to see our boys play the way they did,â€ť said Christen. â€śLoup County was no pushover team and they showed us that but the boys fought back early and finished the game very well.â€ť
Leading the Coyotes in scoring was J. Christen with 20 points, he also grabbed 16 rebounds. Also scoring for the Coyotes was Evans with 7 points, Ryan Halouska 7, Geiser 6, Chandler 4, Gilligan 2 and Trevor Schipporeit 2.
Leading the Wildcats in scoring was Tyler Barta with 12 points followed by Brandon Barker with 11, Tyrel Hinton 6 and Trey Caldwell 4.
Loup County 37
TAYLOR -- The Wildcats advanced to the championship game after defeating Ansley 37-35 for their second win of the season.
Ansley led 13-7 after the first quarter, but the Wildcats outscored the Warriors in each of the three remaining quarters for the narrow win.
Dylan Strohl-Yeomans led the Wildcats with 11 points. Also scoring for the Wildcats was Barker with 10 points, Barta 8, Caldwell 5 and Justin Stapleman 3.
TAYLOR -- The Sargent Bulldogs held on to defeat the Ansley Warriors 43-34 in the consolation game of the Loup County Post Holiday Tournament.
The Bulldogs needed a 16-9 second quarter to take a 24-14 lead at halftime. Both teams played nearly even in the second half with Ansley owning a one point advantage which was not enough for the Warriors to narrow the deficit.
Fenske scored 30 of Sargentâ€™s 43 points to lead the Bulldogs. Fenske shot an impressive 14 of 20 from the field and shot 2 of 4 from the free throw line. Also scoring for the Bulldogâ€™s was Horky with 3 points and Richards and Williams with 2 points each.

Loup County 39
TAYLOR -- The Ansley Lady Warriors defeated Loup County 65-39 in the first round of the Loup County Post Holiday Tournament.
Tazy Scott jump started the Lady Warriors scoring six of their first eight points. Ansley held the Lady Wildcats to eight points in each of the first two quarters while scoring 31 before halftime. The Lady Warriors increased their lead in the second half outscoring the Lady Wildcats 34-23.
Katie Drake led the Lady Warriors with 18 points followed by Siera Rohde with 14 points, Taylor Rohde 8, Tazy Scott 7, Kathleen Ryan 5, Courtney Marsh 2, Jordan Marsh 2, Rebekah Lewis 2, Chelsea Entz 2, Kate Watts 2, Maria Terrazas 2 and LaKoya Scott 2.
In the championship game, the Lady Warriors met the Anselmo-Merna Lady Coyotes who recorded a 57-47 upset win over the Sargent Lady Bulldogs. Ansley jumped out to an early 13-7 first quarter lead. The 6-point lead was was maintained throughout the second quarter with both teams scoring 10 points and the Lady Warriors holding a 23-17 halftime lead. The Lady Warriors were able to hold off the Lady Coyotes adding three points to their advantage in the second half for a 43-34 championship win.
The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by Siera Rohde with 15 points followed by Drake with 10, Ryan 8, C. Marsh 4, Entz 4 and T. Scott 2.
Anna Finney led the Lady Coyotes with 10 points followed by Sadie Hunt with 7, Julia Downey 7, Jessi Burnett 6, Victoria Downey 2 and Kassie Russell 2.
Against the Sargent Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Coyotes scored 22 first half points then scored 35 points in the second with Burnett scoring 14 of her 16 points in the final two quarters to lead the Lady Coyotes in scoring. Also scoring for Anselmo-Merna were Finney with 15, V. Downey 12, Hunt 5, J. Downey 5, Russell 2 and Katie Kirkpatrick 2.
