Duane Vannice, 94

Duane Merlin Vannice, 94, passed away March 7, 2014, at Gateway Senior Living in Lincoln. He is survived by his wife, Eugenia, his sons and their wives, Merlin Albert and Bette Ann of Boalsburg, PA and Eugene Duane and Sally of Lincoln, NE and his grandson, Tyler Duane, also of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin C. and Esther Rae Vannice, his daughter, Diane Lou, and his sister, Evelyn Kelly.
Duane was born May 13, 1919, in Broken Bow and attended high school there. After two years of service in the Army and a year of college in California, he married Eugenia Farmer in 1942 and they moved from Broken Bow to a small ranch east of Halsey
He owned and ran a grocery store in Dunning before spending a year working at a fish hatchery in Crawford before returning to Halsey to become U.S. Postmaster there in 1953. During this period, Duane also ran a small mink ranch and had a small herd of dairy cows.
After his retirement in 1981, he enjoyed his time maintaining the ranch, moving to Lincoln in 2007.
No funeral services are planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the ASPCA, P.O.Box 96929, Washington, D.C. 20090-6929 as Duane had a deep love for animals. Cards of condolence can be sent to Eugenia at Gateway Senior Living, 225 N. 56th St., Lincoln, NE 68504
