Fall season kicks off this weekend in Arcadia and Callaway
22nd Annual Callaway Kite FlightCALLAWAY - - In late summer, kites fill the sky and crowds fill the community during the Annual Callaway Kite Flight Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1-2. This event, sanctioned by the American Kite Association, brings guests from across the country and overseas to fly, display and watch kites This year will mark the 22nd anniversary of the Kite Flight. Flying begins at Foster Smith Field four miles southeast of Callaway at just after 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Professionals and amateurs can enjoy separate fly zones. The field will be open from 8 a.m.-noon Monday for flying. Arcadia Fall Festival ARCADIA - - With many area communities hosting summer celebrations, Arcadia prefers to celebrate as the hussle and bussle of summer begins to wind down. The town’s annual Fall Festival is always held Labor Day weekend, and nobody does up Labor Day like Arcadia! The event’s popular demolition derby draws competitors from across central Nebraska and begins at 2 p.m. Sunday. Events conclude Monday, Labor Day, with several activities. The real highlight of the Fall Festival, however, is the annual parade. According to organizers, the annual Fall Festival parade has the reputation of being central Nebraska’s largest parade - with more than 100 entries. This year’s Big Fall Festival Parade is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, with the theme, “Seasons of Our Lives.” The crowning of the Fall Festival Queen follows the parade, which is then followed by a delicious barbecue dinner. The Junior Rodeo will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the arena north of the ballfield. The community also hosts an amateur musical program Saturday and Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. Voting for the Fall Festival Queen will be Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Legion Hall. The candidates are as follows: Megan Gabriel is the 17- year-old daughter of Kevin and Julie Gabriel. Her activities include volleyball, basketball, track, cheerleading, band, One-Act, speech, choir, RKD Livestock 4-H Club member, CYO, and a volunteer to go on mission trips. Megan enjoys working at the Valley View Living Center, where she has been working for the past year. Her hobbies include reading, playing the piano, singing, helping her dad outside on the farm, swimming, and hanging out with her friends and family. After high school graduation, she plans to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. Her ultimate goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. Celeste Ellen Gould is the daughter of Terry and Nancy Gould. Her activities include speech, one act, FCA, a capella, band, youth group, member of the National Honor Society. After high-school, Celeste plans on attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and studying investigative journalism and international communications. She also plans on being a part of study abroad programs. One of her biggest goals is to become a published novelist. Brittany Lynn Bose is the daughter of Kevin & Jodi Bose. Her activities include volleyball, basketball, track, one act, speech, band, quiz bowl, science olympiad, National Honor Society, 4H, student council, and annual staff. Brittany’s future plans are to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Elizabeth Einspahr is the seventeen year old daughter of Kevin and Kay Einspahr. She has been involved in many activities during high school. She is involved in golf, basketball, and one act. After high school she plans to attend Bryan LGH college of health science and minor in adult cardiac and vascular sonography with a minor in Spanish. Shayla Trotter is the daughter of Jess and Becky Trotter. Her activities include volleyball, basketball, track, cheerleading, one-act, 4-H, CYO, National Honor Society member, quiz bowl, band, riding horses, and hanging out with family and friends. She is planning to attend college and major in finance or public relations. Demi May Dorsey is the daughter of Gene Dorsey and Nancy Dorsey. She is involved in volleyball, basketball, track and field, cheerleading, one act, National Honor Society, speech and also Central Community College's Career Academy for the 2012-2013 school year. Her future plans are to attend a 4 year college and pursue a career in the Financial industry such as a Certified Public Accountant or a Financial Manager at a large profitable business. Kayla Lane is the daughter of Marvin and Michelle Lane. She is active in volleyball, basketball, track, one-act, band and 4-H. She is also a member of the student council. In her free time she enjoys cake decorating and showing livestock. Her future plans are to attend college and major in pharmacy.
