The weather has cooled, the leaves started their colorful changes, and the holidays are just around the corner. Take time for yourself to gather real greenery in the beauty of Halsey National Forest and expand your creative side in making wreaths, swags, and centerpieces for Thanksgiving or Christmas decorations.

The Central Sandhills Extension, in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, is planning a workshop for Green Gatherers to enjoy the festive holiday spirit on November 19th from 10 am – 4 pm CT. Take a break during the hectic holiday season and treated yourself to the tranquility of the U.S. National Forest at Halsey, the beauty of the State 4-H Camp Lodge, and the joy of creativity while making their own Christmas wreathes, centerpieces, and garlands. You start the morning as Green Gatherers! Participants walked through the beautiful forest to clip and gather greenery from the pine trees, blue berries from the cedar trees, deep red sumac seeds, yucca pods, and other decorative items. Once the greenery is gathered, the group proceeds back to the State 4-H Camp Lodge.

After warming up in front of the fireplace with hot cider, the basics of creating wreaths and tying decorative bows is explained. Floral tips to increase the beauty of decorating with greenery, while keeping costs down, are also explained. Sue Pearman, Extension Educator who plans the Gathering of the Greens, is constantly amazed at the creativity and differences of the participants creations. These fresh greenery designs would start at $35 in a florist shop. And you can make at least three items while you are here. Its a great bargain!

Wreaths, centerpieces with candles, greenery baskets, wire wreaths with greenery, and even a mailbox swag have been created in the day spent at the workshop. Some decorations, candles, ribbon, wreath forms, and containers with foam are provided. Workshop participants need to bring work gloves, needle nosed pliers, clippers. (Small ornaments or other decorations, vases, or baskets can be brought as well).

The Gathering of the Greens will be Saturday, Nov. 19 at Halsey. A full days workshop (including meal) is $25. Registration for a meal count is appreciated by Nov. 11. Send $10 to reserve your meal. Registrations will be taken until full. If you would like more information, call the Central Sandhills Area Extension Office at 1-800-657-2113 or 645-2267.
