"Homecoming" in Mason City this weekend

July 27, 2012

MASON CITY - - Although the Lincoln Town Site company named this town Mason after Judge O. P. Mason of Lincoln, the post office refused to accept that name because it could be too easily confused with Macon. So, the railroad referred to it as Mason and the post office became known as Mason City.
Each year Mason City hosts a “Homecoming Celebration”, which not only beckons alumni of the community’s now extinct school, but to all who have fond memories of life in a small town.
The Homecoming Celeb-ration will be Saturday and Sunday in Mason City. Events Saturday will include a tractor pull at 1 p.m., and the parade at 5:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s parade is “Song Titles.” Kids races, turtle races and a cake walk in the park will follow the parade Saturday evening.
The food stand will be open at the Community Hall from 4-9:30 p.m. Saturday, serving roast beef sandwiches, salads and desserts.
The Crow’s Nest will host a teen dance from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. for youth age 13-18. Admission is $2.
Sunday will begin with a community church service at 9:30 a.m., featuring Roger McDermott, in Memorial Park. Fellowship and refreshments will be offered following the service.
Sand volleyball will get underway at 9 a.m. at the ball park, and the catered alumni dinner begins at 1 p.m. in the Community Hall.
Flower and garden exhibits will be available for viewing all day Saturday and Sunday in the Community Hall. A raffle will take place for a Henry repeating arms golden boy .22 caliber long rifle, and for a 26-inch 18-speed Mongoose bicycle with helmet. Raffle tickets are available from any fireman or at Nebraska State Bank in Mason City.
Free camping will be available all weekend in Railroad Park.
The weekend events are sponsored by the Mason City Service Club, a non-profit corporation.
