Hooker County celebrates 125 years

The centennial celebration of the Hooker County Courthouse will be part of the Hooker County Fair activities this weekend in Mullen. The 2012 fair also marks the 125th year for Hooker County.

MULLEN - - A big celebration will continue throughout the weekend in Mullen, as Hooker County celebrates 125 years of history, and the 100th
birthday of the Hooker County Courthouse.

The theme of the 2012 Hooker County Fair, the year that marks these two huge milestones, is “Back to the Future.” And the fair board has gone all out with a full slate of activities through Sunday. The celebration in Mullen has been going on all week, with swimming events, a bicycle rodeo, animal show and movie in the park.

There will be city-wide garage sales and a history walk-about Friday, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The 4-H and open livestock show will get underway at 8 a.m. at the Fairgrounds, with the auction and live carcass contest to follow. The livestock sale will begin at 1:30 p.m. The barbecue at the fairgrounds will be serving from 4-7 p.m. Friday for freewill donation. Proceeds from the barbecue will be used to improve the 4-H livestock facilities. McClain’s Mutton Busters starts at 5 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 per person, or $20 per carload. The pig wrestling will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The celebration continues Saturday with the 4-H horse show at 8 a.m. and the exhibit building open from 9-11 a.m. There will be an ice cream
social, serving brownie and strawberry sundaes and blended ice coffee, from 1-7 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church. The 2012 Hooker County
Fair parade will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, with bleacher seating
available if you don’t bring a lawn chair. A parade of fashions
and beard contest will follow the parade. Saturday will also feature
open house tours and a slide show commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Hooker County Courthouse, from 3-4 p.m. The fun will continue
throughout the afternoon with a dunk tank, a pedal tractor pull,
and old fashioned kids games. A freewill barbecue at the courthouse will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed at 6:30 by the turtle races. The full day Saturday will conclude with a dance to the music of “Borderline” at the Fairgrounds from 9p.m. to 1 a.m.

The celebration wraps up Sunday with a 5K trail run/walk starting at 8 a.m., and mud volleyball at 9 a.m. The 4-H lunch stand will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, serving breakfast burritos, nachos, super nachos, hot dogs, roast beef sandwiches and brownie sundaes. Everyone is invited to come help Hooker County celebrate 125 years this weekend in Mullen.
