Ivan Cool, 89

September 21, 2011

Ivan Cool passed away peacefully after a long illness Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at his home in Pismo Beach.
He was born in Broken Bow, in 1922, and grew up on the family farm, which his grandfather had homesteaded in the 1880s. In 1939, Ivan went to California to attend Glendale Junior College, where he met his bride-to-be, Eleanor Berrier. They married in 1942, and as the U.S. had entered World War II, he soon enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force.
The mechanical skills he had learned from maintaining farm equipment were put to good use in his service as Crew Chief, where he worked on P-38 and P-51 fighters in England. After the War, Ivan and Eleanor built a home in Van Nuys, Calif., where their children, Larry and Kathie, grew up.
He spent several years working for the California Air National Guard, then took a position as Contracts Administrator for a small aerospace firm, from which he retired in 1977.
In their retirement, Ivan and Eleanor trailered all over the 48 states, where they discovered the beauty of the Central Coast - they moved to Pismo Beach in 1988.
Ivan had a very kind, generous and outgoing nature and was always happy to help family, friends, and neighbors when anything needed fixing or building. We were all privileged to have had his love, companionship and bright smile through the years. He will be sorely missed.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Eleanor; son, Laurence Cool (Carole) of Berkeley, Calif.; daughter, Kathleen Purdy (Scott) of Solvang, Calif.; grandchildren, Jonathan and Matthew Cool, Amy Scholer (Andrew), Darcy Mack (Andrew), and Travis Purdy (Renee); and six beautiful great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ira T. and Glennie (Dewey) Cool, and brother, Dale.
At his request, no formal services will be held.
