John L. Sullivan, 87
John Sullivan, age 87 of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral services were July 16, in the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Glen Emert officiating. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of the arrangements. Mortuary. Memorials have been established to United Methodist Church in Broken Bow or the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
John L. Sullivan was born April 23, 1924, to John â€śJackâ€ť L. and Lulu (Kilmer) Sullivan at Fowler, Colo. Johnâ€™s mother passed away when he was 1-year-old. When he was 12-years-old his father was killed in a road construction accident and at that time he went to live with the Earl and Dora Losh family on a ranch north of Thedford. John graduated from Thedford High School in 1942.
After graduation he worked on the ranch until 1947, when he went to work for the CB&Q Railroad. He was stationed as an operator at Halsey, Marshland and Seneca. In 1953, he became the agent at the Broken Bow CB&Q office. He retired in May 1984, after 37 years with the railroad.
May 21, 1945, John was married to Ruth Giles. The couple recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. To this union three daughters were born.
John was a member of the Broken Bow United Methodist Church, Oddfel-low Lodge, Cosmopolitan Club, Masonic Lodge and Broken Bow Elks Lodge 1688. John was an avid golfer at the Broken Bow Country Club and spent many enjoyable afternoons with his golfing friends. He was also a faithful donor to the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
Survivors include his wife Ruth of Broken Bow; daughters, Carolyn Kerchal of Ord, Sonja Govier and husband Steve of Grand Island, and Joan Dilllenback and husband Al of Grand Island; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister and infant brother; a brother, Gerald Sullivan, and a son-in-law, Gerald â€śGaryâ€ť Kerchal.
He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and many friends.
