John Meyer, 101

John Meyer, 101 years of age from Broken Bow, formerly of Minden and Upland, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
He was born May 16, 1910, in Kearney County near Norman, to H. T. and Minnie (Nielsen) Meyer. He grew up in that area and attended country school. He was baptized and confirmed at the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church south of Minden.
John married Martha Hubert June 4, 1936, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Upland. To this union was born Roger, in 1938, and JoAnn in 1940. After John and Martha were married they farmed four miles south of Minden and attended the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church.
From 1947 until 1965 they farmed and raised their family three miles east of Upland. They retired and moved into Minden in 1965 and joined the St. Paul Lutheran Church.
John was a community leader. He was always willing to serve and held many offices of the Fredericksburg Lutheran Church, Upland Cooperative Credit Association bank board, Upland School Board, the Community Club, the local telephone board, and Co-op Board. John was instrumental in starting a 4-H Club and served as its leader for several years.
He was a progressive farmer; drilling one of the first irrigation wells in Franklin County and using conservation practices and on farm grain storage as they were recommended. In his retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
After leaving their home in Minden, they spent two years at the Bethany Home Assisted Living. In 2002 they moved to Broken Bow and lived at Heritage Hall. Martha died in 2004. John later moved to Independence Hall Assisted Living until his 100th birthday and then moved back to Heritage Hall.
Survivors include son, Roger H. Meyer M.D. and his wife, Patricia of Utica; daughter, JoAnn C. Kottmeyer of Broken Bow; five grandchildren, Cindy Buresh and her husband, Nick of Lincoln, Paul Meyer of Round Rock, Texas, Dan Meyer and his wife, Heather of Lincoln, Jared Kottmeyer of Broken Bow and Evan Kottmeyer and his wife, Jessica of Lincoln; 11 great- grandchildren, Dayne, Ellie and Jake Buresh of Lincoln, Nathan and Holly Meyer of Round Rock, Texas, Trenten, Kasha and Shayla Meyer of Lincoln and Kendra, Kera and Kenly Kottmeyer of Lincoln.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Martha; two brothers, Urban Meyer and Carl Meyer; five sisters, Nera Harlan, Hilma
Christensen, Luella Tomsen, Opal Tollefson and Ruth who died in infancy; and son in-law Fredrick W. Kottmeyer D.D.S. John’s family stated that John lived life until there was no more life to live.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minden with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating.
Burial will be in the Fredericksburg Cemetery south of Minden.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg Cemetery or the donor’s choice.
