Lavern Dickman, 78

Lavern D.(Vern) Dickman, 78, lost his short fought battle with Cancer Sept. 3, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, surrounded by his loving family.
Vern was born in Sargent, to Otto and Lillie (Wolf) Dickman May, 25, 1934. Vern attended country school through 8th grade and graduated from Sargent High School in May 1951.
The day after graduation he went to Broken Bow and bought his first truck, and from then on trucking was his life.
In February 1955, Vern was married to Joyce Drake of Comstock. They had three children; Rick, Monte and Roberta (Bobbi). They lived in Sargent till 1961, when they moved to Thedford. In 1962, they moved back to Sargent for eight months
Sand had gotten into his boots and in April 1963, Vern moved his family back to the Sandhills to the small town of Halsey where they made their home for the next 45 years and established Dickman Transfer, livestock being the main commodity. Before moving to the Sandhills Vern trucked with his Dad and brother Dale. Vern was known by friends and fellow truckers as “Ol Dad '94”.
They returned to Sargent in 2008.
Survivors include wife of 58 years, Joyce; sons, Rick (Susan) of Axtel, and Monte (Leslie) of Thedford; daughter, Bobbi (Clyde) Johnson of Elk Mtn., Wyo.; six grand children, Judd (Dani) Dickman, Jedd Dickman, Dustin Dickman, Kelcee Dickman, Seth Johnson and Shane (Kassie) Johnson; four step-grandchildren, Jeremy Scheer, Dustin Scheer, Chase Scheer and Nicole Scheer; seven great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. Vern is also survived by brother, Don (Ghertie) Dickman of Bella Vista Ark. He is preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Lillie Dickman; two brothers, Gerht and Dale Dickman, and one sister, Garnet (Toots) Haumont.
Memorial services were Friday, Sept. 7 in Sargent at the Rhoad Funeral Home. Internment was at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Mount Hope Cemetery Fund.
