Most trails re-open at Bessey Ranger District before Labor Day

August 24, 2012

Halsey – Most of the roads and trails at Bessey Ranger District near Halsey will re-open next week in time to welcome Labor Day weekend visitors. The roads and trails have been closed since early July due to hazard tree dangers and damage to the trails that occurred during the Camp 5 Fire earlier this summer.

According to Bessey District Ranger, Tim Buskirk, crews have completed removing hazard trees and clearing trails to allow the opening of all roads and ATV trails, and the Dismal Play Area. However, Whitetail Campground and the only access road to the campground will remain closed. The Natick campground and horse corrals were re-opened several weeks ago.

“We are pleased to re-open these popular trails to our visitors in time for the Labor Day weekend, but caution that the Sandhills and entire Camp 5 Fire area remain very fragile because of both fire damages and extended drought,” said Buskirk. “We ask the public to help us keep these roads and trails open by only riding on designated routes, and complying with Stage II Fire Restrictions which have been in place since late June,” he said.

The entire Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands, including the Bessey Ranger District and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest remains under Stage II Fire Restriction Orders. Please visit our website for more information, http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/nebraska.
