Mullen publisher receives national award

July 14, 2011

Mullen newspaper publisher, Gerri Peterson, has been selected by the National Newspaper Association as this year’s winner of the prestigious ‘Daniel Morris Phillips Leadership’ Award.

MULLEN -- Hooker County Tribune publisher Gerri Peterson is this year’s recipient of the National Newspaper Association’s Daniel M. Phillips Leadership Award. She will be honored this fall during the association’s 125th Annual Convention in Albuquerque, N.M.
NNA established this award in 2007 to honor Daniel Morris Phillips, an award-winning writer, photographer and assistant publisher of the Oxford Eagle, who died in 2005 at the age of 47.
This award is presented to an individual between 23-40 years old who is well respected in his or her community, of good reputation and integrity, provides active leadership in the newspaper industry and is active in his or her state press association and community.
“It was such a surprise and honor to be notified that I had not ony been nominated for this award, but that I had been named the recipient!
“As a young journalist who dreamed of owning my hometown paper, it means so much to me that Deb McCaslin and my own community members think enough of me to nominate me,” said Peterson on Monday, shortly after receiving a call from the National Association telling her of her selection.
“It was my pleasure to nominate Gerri for the award,” said McCaslin. “I know what it takes to run a paper. In Mullen Gerri is the publisher, editor, photographer, compositor, marketing strategist and delivery gal. I think she might possibly be one of the youngest publisher/owners in the country. The selection is well deserved.”
Peterson was honored early this year by the Nebraska Press Association as the 2011 ‘Young Journalist of the Year.’
