Robert Lawrence, 84
Robert Allen Lawrence, 84 of Ansley, died April 27, 2011 at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services were Monday May 2, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Mary Jane Gockley officiating. Burial was in the Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with Military Honors by the US Navy Honor Guard.
Robert Allen Lawrence was born Nov. 23, 1926, at Brooklyn, NY to William T. and Carolyn L. (Stevenson). He grew up in New York City, attended public school, including the High School of Music and Art. At the onset of WW II, his parents moved back to Cornwall-on-Hudson, from which his family came.
He left for the Navy when he was 17, and served for five years. He received the Purple Heart in the Atlantic and went on to serve in the Pacific.
Upon his return, he attended Syracuse University where he received a bachelor's degree. He received a master's degree in Art Education from the University of the State of New York.
Robert taught art in New York Public Schools, the last 21 years at Hendrk Hudson High School in Montrose, NY. He also taught at the Virginia Art Institute while pursuing a doctorate at the University of Virginia.
After retirement, he moved to Lincoln, where he was on the governing board of Taxpayers for Quality Education. He moved to Ansley in 1993. Robert was given a One-Man Show at Doane College in 2006.
When asked what he believed, he would say, "I believe that Jesus Christ is exactly what He said He was."
Robert is survived by his wife, Althea, of Ansley; his children, Michael Lawrence and Beverly Kellerman both of NY, Carolyn Lawrence of Beatrice, Leslie Lawrence of NY; two step-children, Lisa Cornwall of California, and Christine Hopkins of Massachusetts; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Allen and a daughter Renee.
