Robert Sweley, 84, of Litchfield, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2012, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Graveside Services were Monday, Aug. 6, at the Litchfield Cemetery in Litchfield with the Rev. George Reitz officiating. Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna was in charge of arrangements.
Robert Dee Sweley was born July 5, 1928, on the farm in rural Litchfield to John and Gladys (Sloan) Sweley. As a young man he worked construction and on his uncleâ€™s Sandhills ranch. At the age of 14, he was granted a special permit to drive, as he drove a truck hauling coal for military rations. Eventually he returned to the farm where he spent his life.
He served in the military twice, once enlisting in the Marines and then being drafted into the Army.
He married the love of his life, Donna Unick, Dec.18, 1957, in Kearney. To this union five children were born.
Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his family, his animals and nature. He lived 84 independent years and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Dee Sweley of Litchfield and Barry and Marie Sweley of Litchfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Kim Wolfe of Columbus and Jody Sweley and Jon Darby of Pleasanton; 10 grandchildren, Tatum, Nathan and Tracy Wolfe of Columbus, Brady, Brooke and Bridget Darby of Pleasanton and Katelynn, Emilee, Sydnee and Hunter Sweley of Litchfield; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gene Unick, Vernon and Marilyn Unick, Lloyd and Marilyn Unick, Dorothy Stark, Joan Unick and June Sweley and Rich Kowalewski
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae, Aug. 6, 2007; a daughter, Shannon; a granddaughter, Amber; sisters, Donna Conley, Joann Sennett; brother, Warren Sweley; sister-in-law, Wanda Unick; brothers-in-law, John Conley, Dick Sennett, Dave Stark and Donald Unick.
