Ronald J. Rice, 62 of Berwyn, formerly of Ord, died Friday, May 27, 2011, at the Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Funeral Services were June 1, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Heartland Assembly of God Church in Ord with Pastor Lonny Carpenter officiating. Burial was in the Ord City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or to his three granddaughters. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Ronald James Rice was born Nov. 17, 1948, at Ord, to Marvin and Eva (King). He grew up in Valley County where he attended Vinton and Cottonwood rural schools and graduated from Ord High School in 1967. He continued his education at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, where he studied diesel mechanics and graduated in 1969.
June 1, 1969, Ron married Emily Nelsen at Curtis. To this union two daughters were born; Stacy and Shannon. Ron made his home in Ord where he worked for 30 years as a mechanic at John Deere. He then moved to Broken Bow and then returned to Ord working at J&S Diesel.
Recently he had been working for Frank Govier in the Weissert area while living in Berwyn.
He was a member of the Heartland Assembly of God Church and Gideons International. He loved John Deer tractors and his dogs. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, and bowling.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy and Joel Streff of Ord and Shannon and Brent Phillips of Lincoln; his father, Marvin Rice of Ord; three granddaughters, Kelsey Streff of Ord and Hailey and Mackenzie Phillips of Lincoln; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Susan Rice of Ord; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eileen Rice of Tajique, NM, and Joyce and Rick Wolfenden of Mullen; and two special friends, Dale Thomas of Berwyn and Meriam Thomas of Berwyn.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eva Rice and his dog, Shelby.
