Det. 1 of the National Guard 1074th Transportation Co., based in Broken Bow, left Tuesday morning on a short-term mission to the Gulf Coast region. The troops will assist in recovery efforts following the landfall of Hurricane Gustav in the region. They will join about 13,000 troops from across the U.S. in the recovery project.

Broken Bow’s soldiers left Tuesday to assist with recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast.
The region was hit with a Category 2 Hurricane, named Gustav, Sunday.
The National Guard Unit, Det. 1 of the 1074th Transportation Co., based in Broken Bow, received orders Sunday to join recovery work in Louisiana.
“ A lot of them join to do just this sort of thing, to help their fellow Americans,” said Sgt. Tim McCaslin.

McCaslin, a recruiter with the National Guard in Broken Bow said the unit, including its new readiness officer, SSG Adren Uhlig, departed for the staging location in Hastings.
From there, the troops will leave for the Gulf Coast in Louisiana, McCaslin said.
McCaslin said the unit received its orders even before the hurricane reached landfall Sunday night.
“This was a pre-emptive plan,” McCaslin said. “Many units across the state got the same orders Sunday night.”
The troops from the Broken Bow unit will join nearly 13,000 personnel from 15 states who will support operations in the Gulf Coast region.
There, McCaslin said, the Guard troops will provide essential, lifesaving services, and have the capability to provide helicopter and boat rescue, shelter, food, water and medical support.
“The Guard has a two-fold mission. We have a federal mission and a state mission,” McCaslin said. “And this is one of those great opportunities to help with a stateside mission.”
