By Michelle Zlomke Chief Managing Editor The driver of a truck took evasive action to avoid directly hitting a Ford Bronco on Highway 2 near Broken Bow Friday. Jordan Portiner, 27, was east bound in a 1992 Ford Bronco on Highway 2 east of Broken Bow when he stopped the vehicle to make a U-turn, according Custer County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Osmond.
Osmond said 36-year-old David Summerford was behind Portiner’s vehicle, driving a truck owned by Palmer Monument. He said Summerford swerved to avoid rear-ending the Portiner vehicle. Summerford’s truck which was pulling a trailer, ended up in the south ditch. Summerford was transferred to the hospital in Broekn Bow by the Ansley Volunteer Rescue Unit. A passenger in the truck, 58-year-old Jeffrey Schlund of Broken Bow, was transported to the hospital by Broken Bow Ambulance. Schlund was wearing a seatbelt, Summerford was not, Osmond said. Osmond said both men were treated for deep lacerations. Occupants in the Portiner vehicle included a 19-year-old woman, a 20-year-old woman, and an infant. Only the infant was restrained. Osmond said he was unable to estimate the damage to the Palmer Monument truck. The Bronco received only minor damage as it was clipped by the truck. |
