TAYLOR -- Loup County teacher Kevin Brown was in for a surprise last week.
As he entered the gymnasium Monday, he was greeted by a standing ovation, cheers and applause from students, faculty and community members who joined together to surprise and honor Brown for his recent award from the Nebraska Speech Communication and Theatre Association.

Brown received the 2008 John Thurber Distinguished Teacher Award Sept. 26 at a banquet in Lincoln; however the faculty and students at the school decided a hometown celebration was in order for their friend and teacher.
“I was very surprised,” said Brown. “I had no idea they had this planned.”
In addition to a giant “Congratulations Brownie” banner covering the length of the volleyball net in the gym, students held handmade signs congratulating him for his achievement.
He was treated to a student skit spoofing a typical day in his English classroom, presented with a gift of chocolate brownies, a silver bell and an engraved silver desktop plaque from student and teacher organizations at the high school.
Brown has taught at Loup County High School for 26 years and was nominated for the Thurber Distinguished Teacher award by fellow speech and theater instructors throughout Central Nebraska.
For 11 consecutive years, Mr. Brown he has had the distinction of coaching the Wildcat speech team to either a district championship or runner-up placing.
“Mr. Brown has a unique talent of inspiring all students of all ability levels to do their best,” said Rusty Rupert, Loup County School superintendent. “He brings it out in them.”
Brown is a huge fan of the Loup County ‘Cats’ and, when not announcing, leads the cheers from the stands at games.
He is responsible for inventing the ‘Taylor Tidal Wave’, a renowned community cheer at Loup County High School.
The students, friends and faculty attending the surprise party concluded Monday’s party by honoring Mr. Brown with a rousing ‘tidal wave’ cheer in honor of his achievement.
