Custer Co. Chief announces ‘Little, Big Give’ finalists PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 13 November 2008
The staff of the Custer County Chief is proud to announce the finalists for their “Little Give, Big Give” program.
“The quality of the projects the applicants selected are very impressive. There are some wonderful, hard-working volunteers out there,” said Chief Publisher Deb McCaslin.
The out-of-area selection committee members said narrowing the choice down to the final 10 was nearly impossible. They were able to get the list down to 12, but due to the wide range of projects, asked if the Chief would consider expanding the number of finalists.         “Each of these 12 organizations have fine ideas for community service,” McCaslin added.
So, here goes … in alphabetical order …
The “Little Give, Big Give” finalists …

Anselmo-Merna National Honor Society - This organization has plans to start a recycling project throughout their school and community. The “Little Give” funds will be used to purchase the first of the recycling bins.

Arnold Rialto Theater Board - According to their application, the grant money will be used to rent a suitable family movie to show during the Christmas season to promote the theater and offer the movie as a community service.

Breast Cancer Support Group - This organization has a “Goodies from our Heart’s to Your Home for the Holidays” bake sale planned. They will use the money from the grant to purchase ingredients and promote the sale. The moneys raised will be used to purchase gas cards for those driving long distances for cancer treatments.

Broken Bow Boy Scout Troop 48 - The scouts would like to repaint the flag collection box at the Broken Bow Court House and to raise funds to purchase another burn ring to be used during their flag retirement ceremonies.

Broken Bow United Methodist Church Senior High Youth - The youth group has a mission trip to Greensburg, Kan., planned for next summer. The grant money will be used to purchase reusable market bags to sell as a fund-raiser for their trip.

Custer County Early Childhood Committee - Their grant will be used to help solicit donations for scholarships for children to attend preschool. In their application they explained how the project will impact the preschool age child, his family, the school and the community.

Operation Christmas Child - This organization provides Christmas boxes for children in orphanages living in war-torn countries. The grant funds would be used to promote and educate the community on this activity.

Broken Bow Evangelical Free Church - Wrote on their grant application they would use the money to seed the fund-raising needed to send their puppet team to Camp Barnabas in Purdy, Mo., to help at a non-denominational camp for handicapped children.

Sargent Public School -Their funds will be used to buy bins and barrels to place inside the school to recycle cans and bottles. The funds raised through recycling these items will be used to expand the project throughout the community.

Sargent Women’s Action Team - These ladies would like to put on a play this coming December to raise money for the Summer Recreational Ball Field program. The moneys from the grant will be used to purchase supplies for the pie and ice cream social and to purchase play books.

University of Nebraska-Extension in Custer County -This organization has said they will use the money to promote and encourage others to be aware of their “Backpack Program” which helps feed low income families over the weekend when federal nutrition programs are not in place.

Each of the “Little Give” finalists will receive a check for $100 and an opportunity to compete for the $1,000 “Big Gift.”
A special edition to be published in January will tell more about each of these organizations, their members and projects.
The final “Big Give” winner will be announced in January, in this special edition.
“Last April, the Chief was honored with a Community Service Award from the Omaha World Herald. This very nice award came with a check for $1,000. The “Little Give, Big Give” project is a way to pass this funding onto the communities we serve,” McCaslin said, “along with some funding of our own.”
“Congratulations!”
