SARGENT -- A three-truck accident south of Sargent sent two drivers to the hospital Friday, according to Custer County Sheriff Ted Henderson.
According to Henderson, 37-year-old James Myers of Gothenburg crossed the center line and hit two other trucks.
The accident occurred approximately nine miles south of Sargent around 3:45 p.m. Friday, Henderson said.
Myers was southbound on Nebraska Highway 183 in a 2000 International owned by Tri-State By-Products of Lexington when he hit the front of a northbound truck owned by Paul Bartels Trucking of Kearney.
After colliding with that truck, Myers hit the trailer of another Bartels truck that was following the first northbound truck, Henderson said.
The Bartels truck in front was driven by Randall Berry, 58 of Trenton. The second Bartels truck was driven by Kelly Evans, 61 of Cambridge.
Both Bartels trucks were 2007 Freightliners.
Myers was transported by Sargent ambulance to Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Berry was transported by Comstock ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Henderson said. Evans was not injured in the accident.
Both the Myers truck and the Berry truck were a total loss.
Henderson said it appears Myers crossed the center line when his visibility was affected by snow kicking up from a nearby snowplow.
The roads were snow packed and the wind was blowing at the time.
“They had apparently met a snowplow which was kicking up snow,” Henderson said.
He said he does not know which direction the snowplow was traveling.
Henderson said drivers should use extra caution when roads are being cleared.
“You need to just stay back so if someone does get lost in the white-out, they have time to correct the situation,” he said.
