The replacement of Superintendent Bob Brown, who is retiring at the end of school year, was one of the hot topics discussed at Sargent Public School Board’s Monday meeting. Brown said the board has interviewed several applicants and have one more interview scheduled. Sargent is looking at having a part-time superintendent that would serve the Sargent Public School exclusively. Arnold and Sargent currently share Mr. Brown as their superintendent, but Arnold will be sharing with Callaway for the coming school year.
The meeting’s agenda included financial reports and approval of bills as well as the consideration of an inter-fund loan. The loan would be used to assist the current budget for the school and anticipated tax money received by the school each month would be used for the monthly budget as well as assist in repaying the loan. The board voted to proceed with the inter-fund loan and agreed that the financial status of the Sargent school was very positive. The next item on the agenda involved the consideration of renewing Principal Cory Grint’s contract. Principal Grint asked that the board consider, instead of giving him a raise with a renewal of his contract, to allow discretionary money to be added to the general fund that could be used to purchase items for the teaching staff. Members of the board complimented Grint on his exceptional job and then voted to renew his contract with the discretionary money added to the general fund as per his request. Grint’s report included the announcement of the time and date of the school Christmas concert, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. He also discussed the option of providing a shot clinic at the school for the H1N1 virus. The board discussed how the virus has pretty much run its course, and because the vaccine was available at the local clinics they voted not to offer the clinic through the school. In addition, Grint explained that the heating system in the school had just been worked on and concluded his report saying that Sargent currently has 168 students enrolled. Brown closed the meeting by discussing the future possibility of co-oping activities, primarily sports, with Ansley Public Schools. The board members decided to nominate a committee at the next board meeting to discuss this possibility. The next board meeting is scheduled for Jan 12, 2010, at noon. |
