The above scene awaited students at Arcadia High School as they exited the school building April 30. Arcadia students acted as “victims” of an alcohol-related traffic accident. The students looked on as police officers and EMT’s responded to the scene.
In the drill, two of the “victims” did not survive the accident and were taken away by the local hearse. The students watched in silence as the drama unfolded before them, which included a distraught father whose son was one of the deaths. In all, about 26 people volunteered for the program, which included the Arcadia Police Department, Arcadia Fire Department and Valley County Ambulance crew. Students participating in the drill included Abby Franzen, shown leaning out the windshield, Devin Scott, shown laying behind the car, Dani Masters as the back seat passenger and Broady Chilewski as the driver of the vehicle. Arcadia Fire Chief Dan Scott, father of “victim” Devin Scott, portrayed the grieving father. Also taking part in the simulation were Nebraska State Patrol Officers Beefe and Scheltze, Roland Barnes with the Arcadia Police Department, Valley County Sheriff Gary Walker, Kristy Grint of Elm Creek and Shawn Owens. The on-scene presentation lasted about 20 minutes, after which the students were taken in to the school gym where the officers conducted a program on drinking and driving. |
