Glen H. Fernau, age 89, of Arcadia,, died May 1, 2008, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow. Funeral services were May 6, in the Arcadia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Janet Burgel officiating.  Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery with military rites. Govier Brothers Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Arcadia  American Legion Post 251.
Glen H. Fernau was born Sept. 18, 1918, in Brown County to David and Ella Mae (Wolcott) Fernau. He attended school in Brown County and graduated from Ainsworth High School  in 1936.          After graduation, Glen worked on his grandparents’ (Wolcotts) herford ranch until he joined the Army in 1942.  He joined with his brother Charlie, and they were aircraft mechanics during World War II, serving in Europe.  Five of Glen’s brothers served in World War II at the same time, being only miles apart -- never knowing it until later when they would remincise.
After his discharge in 1945, he worked as a mechanic in  Ainsworth.      On Jan. 7, 1948, Glen married Pauline Einspahr.  They settled in the Valley County area in the 1950s.
They farmed in the North Loup and Arcadia areas until he was employed with Floyd Bossen and then later for Dick Bossen and Bossen Livestock.  Glen retired after about 30 years of employment there.
Glen and Pauline bought a home in Arcadia that they completely re-modeled, doing most of the construction themselves.  After retirement Glen enjoyed woodworking and spent long hours in his basement working on his woodworking projects.
Glen was a member of  Arcadia American Legion Post 251.
Glen is survived by his wife Pauline Fernau of Arcadia; son, Gary Duane and wife Bonnie Fernau of Arcadia; six grandchildren, Garrod (Laura) Fernau, of Ansley, Delta (Brian) Sears of Arcadia, Jamie (Rich) Spencer of Arcadia, Amber (Vernon) Veskerna of Arcadia, Shane (Chalee) Fernau of Kearney, and Jacki  Fernau and Chuck Dostal Fernau of Schuyler; adopted granddaughters, Tasha, Kegan, and Kayla all of Arcadia and two foster granddaughters Rebecca and Brook; five great, grandchildren, Logan Spencer, Lance and Jestin Sears of Arcadia, Garrison Fernau of Ansley,  and Cole Fernau of Kearney; and a foster great-granddaughter, McKenna.; sister Roby of Upton, Wyo.; brothers Lester of Washington, Wilber of Idaho, Earl of Ainsworth,  and LaVern, Rodney and Sidney all of Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; sister Vera; brothers, Charles, Dean, Dale, and a brother, Calvin, who was killed serving in the Army during the Korean  Conflict; and a baby sister, Lottie May.
Of Dean’s 14 siblings, 12 lived, 12 graduated from Ainsworth High School. The only who didn’t was Dean who joined the Army instead of starting his senior year.  Nine boys served in the Armed Forces, one of whom was killed during the Korean Conflict.  Glen’s mother had the honor of being a gold star mother.
