Ruth Applegarth, 81 of Ishpeming, Mich., formerly of Broken Bow, died Dec. 24, 2010, at the Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich.
She was born Aug. 14, 1929, in Anselmo, a daughter of the late Charles and Mabel (Booth) Land. She was a 1947 graduate of Comstock High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Kearney State College.
June 12, 1948, she married Alvin Applegarth in Broken Bow, and he preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1991.
Ruth was a public school teacher for 41 years and retired in 1992 from the Anslemo-Merna school district. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Broken Bow, where she taught CCD classes and was a member of the altar society. Ruth was also a member of the Nebraska Teachers Association. She loved art, particularly painting, and enjoyed bingo, cards and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by three children, Susan Hauser of Omaha, Charles (Terry) Applegarth of Easton, Penn., and Lenora (Michael) McKeen of Gwinn; grandchildren, Stacy and Travis Hauser, Austin, Michaela and Katelyn McKeen; great-grandchildren, Lizzy and Kate Hauser; and siblings, Johnny Land of Gwinn and Barb (Jim) Campbell of Gwinn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings, Bud Land, George Land and Marie Budenbender.
Visitation will be today, Dec. 30, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. with the Rosary to follow at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Broken Bow. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 31, at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Jim Hunt officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
