Wayne LeRoy Hirsch of Broken Bow passed away unexpectedly at home Jan. 12, 2011.
Wayne was born June 18, 1931, in Merna to Fredrick (Fritz) and Alice Hirsch. Wayne grew up on a farm west of Merna and graduated from Merna High school in 1949.
September 9, 1951 he was united in marriage to Rosella Mae Booker in Callaway. They resided on a small farm southwest of Callaway until moving to Kimball, then to Broken Bow in 1957.
Wayne farmed; worked for the City of Kimball; Callaway Co-op; Custer Public Power; Broken Bow Co-op; and finally Custer County Roads Department.
He loved to be out on the road mowing, riding his tractor and always took pride in his work.
In his earlier years Wayne’s hobbies included coaching baseball, hunting, fishing and in his later years sitting on the deck and feeding his squirrels.
He was active in the local Elk’s Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler 1981-82. His most cherished activity was enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Rose; son, Darrell (Janice) Hirsch of Arvada, Colo.; daughters, Debra (Bernard) Gribble of Chambers, and Denise (Leonard) Daake of Merna; sister, Marie (Keith) Kastens of Merna; sister-in-law, Elleanor Hirsch of Callaway; brother-in-law, Franklin Manning of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Erin) Hirsch of Littleton, Colo., Jaime Hirsch of Westminster, Colo., Adam (Trish) Marcellus of Lincoln, Nicole (Chad) Henderson of Tyndall, S.D., Jennifer (John) Thompson of Norfolk, Jessica Hardin of Kearney, Mattie (Marty) Demoret of Kearney, and Deena (Josh) Cook of Broken Bow; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Lagene Hirsch and Shirley Manning.
Iverson Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. The services were Jan. 15, 2011 at the Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Faith Bible Fellowship or the family.
