Reverend Raymond Frank Sorensen, son of Frank G. Sorensen and Ella Dee Rhoades Sorensen, was born Feb. 14, 1934, in Ansley. He died Feb. 6, 2011, in a traffic accident just outside of Scranton, Iowa. Ray
was 76 years of age.
Ray grew up in Ansley, and graduated from Ansley High School. In February 1953, Ray enlisted in the Marine Corp and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.
Ray served during the Korean Conflict and received the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged in February 1957. Ray then attended one year of Community College in Woodland Hills, Calif., before going to Springfield, Missouri for four years of Bible School.
Ray moved to Ankeny, Iowa in 1983, and became the Pastor of the Ankeny First Assembly of God. Ray stayed in Ankeny for nine years before moving to Jefferson, Iowa in 1992, were he became the Associate Pastor of the Jefferson Assembly of God.
Ray was an active member of The Dwelling Place in Jefferson, and was a member of the American Legion where he was the chaplain.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Stella Empkey.
He is survived by his children, Steve (MaryAnn) Sorensen Sr. of Johnston, Iowa, Debbie Thurman of Oregon, and John (Leann) Sorensen of Las Vegas, Nevada; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service of remembrance was held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at The Dwelling Place in Jefferson, Iowa. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Rod Block. Interment was Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Ansley Township Cemetery in Ansley.
Jefferson casket bearers were Steve Sorensen, Sr., Steve Sorensen, Jr., John Sorensen, Raymond F. Sorensen, II, Tim Owens, Matthew Owens and Daniel Owens. Ansley casket bearers were Jim Trotter, Lyle Ferguson and Ervie Ferguson, Jr.
Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home of Jefferson, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
