Ivan D. Nelson, son of Axel and Ethel (Wright) Nelson, was born Jan. 14, 1919, at Mason City, and departed his life Feb. 17, 2011, at Grand Island, at the age of 92 years.
He attended Round Grove rural school through the 8th grade, graduated from the Mason City High School with the class of 1936.
Ivan served in the United States Army during World War II and spent 42 months in the Pacific area. After his discharge he came to Broken Bow and was employed by the Broken Bow Wholesale Company, then was a bookkeeper for Meston Motor Company, a Ford and Mercury dealership. Ivan then worked for Custer Public Power District until his retirement in 1985.
September 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to Helen Erazim of Hazard. To this union two children were born, Judy Lynn and Thomas James.
He was a member of the Broken Bow Masonic Bodies, the Eastern Star, American Legion, VFW, the Broken Bow Elks Lodge and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Axel and Ethel Nelson; brother, Jack; and sister Velita.
Ivan is survived by his wife, Helen Nelson of Broken Bow; daughter, Judy Lynn of Kansas City, Mo.; son, Thomas James of Lakewood, Colo., and a host of friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with Masonic Rites, Military Honors and Elk's Rites. Burial was in the Broken Bow Cemetery with Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow in charge of arrangements.
