Ivan Coleman was born Oct. 16, 1930, in the rural Cliff Community near Merna, to Clarence and Mabel (Schaad) Coleman. he left this life April 12, 2011, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow, due to a lengthy illness following a stroke Sept. 23, 2010.
Ivan received his elementary education at the Fairview School District and graduated from Merna High School in 1949, with sports being one of his greatest interests. he was a member of the Nebraska state champion football team in 1948.
After graduation, Ivan was employed by Ayers Clothing of Broken Bow, and the U.S. Geological Survey, but he found that his real love was back on the land, so he returned to farming.
Ivan married Mary Ann Spanel June 3, 1951. To this union four children were born; Garry, Jim, Peggy and Ron.
Their first home was in Lander, Wyo., until they moved back to Broken Bow in the fall of 1951. They lived at First Avenue Apartments until 1953, when they moved to a farm north of Merna.
In 1956, they moved to Powell, Wyo., to enjoy farming under irrigation from the Cody Dam Project. Since 1957, they have been farming in the Broken Bow area.
Ivan enjoyed farming his entire life. he and Mary Ann enjoyed attending Nebraska football games for more than 50 years and passed that tradition on to many of his children and grandchildren. They also loved spending the winter months in their Arizona home.
Ivan enjoyed spending his summers at the diamond coaching, playing and watching softball and baseball. he was a n avid Broken Bow fan and enjoyed attending all his 16 grandchildren’s and 20 great-grandchildren’s sports, music and other programs and events.
Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Mabel Coleman; brother, Donald and his wife Jenny; and a great-grandson, Ryan Stauffer.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; sons, Garry, Jim (Debbie), and Ron (Jeanne) daughter, Peggy (Dan Ferguson); 16 grandchildren, Lori (Von Grove), Timothy, Andrew and Dillon Coleman; Jackie (Mark Chandler), Jeremy, Mitchell, Michael and Marcus Coleman; Tina Stauffer, SAra, Brooke and jessica Ferguson; Amanda (Cody Schweitzer), Ryan (Marilyn), and Brett (Savannah) Coleman; 20 great-grandchildren, Gracie, Madison, Brendan and Kamden Grove, Riley, Mariah, Jaden and Brooklyn Stauffer; Jalea, Seth and Ethan Chandler; Cami Cassidy and Addison Schweitzer; Victoria, Venessa, Joscelyn and Ryker Coleman; and Brenly and Greeley Coleman; niece, Connie Dembowski, and nephew, Lyle Coleman.
