Gertrude R. Hickey Kutsch, age 88 of Cozad, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Golden Living Care Center in Cozad.
Gertrude was born Aug. 11, 1922, at York, to Cornelius and Sylvia (Gess) McCarthy. Her early education was at the convent in York. The family moved to Custer County where she completed grade school at District 129. She attended high school at Anselmo.
March 26, 1940, she married William J. Hickey at Anselmo. He passed away in April 1974. To this union five children were born: Bill, Mike, Jim, Kenny and Karen. She was very devoted to her family. She loved sewing, gardening and trying her luck at Rosebud Casino.
Aug. 29, 1975, she married Lyle Kutsch. He preceded her in death March 1, 2011.
Also preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Mike; daughter-in-law, Connie; great-grandson, Lane; six brothers, Henry, Neil, Dennis, Jerry, Thomas, and John; and a sister, Mary McDermott Kuta.
Survivors include her children, Bill (Lois) Hickey of Willow Island, Jim Hickey of North Platte, Kenneth Hickey of Fairfield, Karen Brooks of Holdrege; two sisters, Mildred Pinkston and Margaret Eastburn of Arnold; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Golden Living Care Center in her memory.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be Saturday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ The King Catholic Church in Cozad with Father Don O’Brien as celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Anselm’s Cemetery east of Anselmo, at 2 p.m.
Visitation will be Friday, May 6, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
