Ann Mary (Martin) Smith, 93, formerly of Arnold, passed away May 11, 2011, at the hospital in Callaway.
Ann was born May 22, 1917, in Wolbach to Robert D. and Mary A. Hansen Martin. She received her education in Wolbach, Greely County and Arnold. Ann worked in the canteen in North Platte during World War II.
Ann was united in marriage to Hal B. Smith July 4, 1935, in Arnold. The couple made their home in Kearney and then in Arnold, where she was employed by the movie theater and sold Avon for 51 years. They also lived in Logan County on the Garfield Table.
As an original member, Ann was a 65-year member of the Wee Wan Chu Club. She was also a member of the Rolling Platters, Nebraska Campers & Hikers Association, Sack Time Campers, 4-H leader, and helped with the Extension Club of the Custer County Fair. She sewed, baked and decorated cakes. For her 90th birthday she cruised to Alaska.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Hal; her parents; two sisters, Henrietta Croghan and Christina Eastburn-Smith, and one brother, Paul D. Nelsen.
Survivors include one daughter, Marilyn (Larry) Brohman of Arnold; one son, Marvin (Anita) Smith of Callaway; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were May 16 at the Arnold United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Roger Gillming officiating. Burial was in the Arnold Cemetery with Arnold Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Memorials may go to the Arnold Public Library, Nebraska Organ Donor Program, the Arnold movie theater or donor’s choice.
