Gary W. Story, age 65, of Kearney died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011 at his residence. Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney with the Rev. Gary was born Dec. 25, 1945, in Dubuque, Iowa, to Harold and Fannie (Bubak) Story. Gary was a graduate of Ansley High School in 1963. September 12, 1969, he married Vickie Schmidt. He served in the Nebraska National Guard and the U.S. Army. Gary worked for the City of Kearney for 38 years, retiring in September 2010 as the Director of Transportation.
In 1982, he successfully completed state examinations to become a licensed superintendent with the Nebraska Department of Roads.He was a past member of the Kearney Elks Lodge 984, Kiwanis and the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department.
Gary served as director, secretary, vice president and president of the Nebraska Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA). He was a Board member appointed by the Governor of Nebraska for the highway and County superintendent license for first class cities. He was an advisory board member of the Nebraska LTAP. Gary was instrumental in starting the Nebraska chapter of the Snow Plow Rodeos.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Vickie, of Kearney; one daughter, Marci Asche and her husband Doug of Omaha; one son, Adam Story and his wife Melissa of Hastings; four grandchildren, Porter and Kian Asche, and Connor and Brendan Story; brother-in-law, Jack Schmidt and his wife Julie and nieces Jill and Tara, of Ansley.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
