BROKEN BOW--The Broken Bow football team was looking for redemption after dropping their first game of the season and did just that. After blocking Ord’s extra-point during the first possession of overtime Broken Bow running back Justin McCullough found the end zone and Tanner Johnson kicked an extra point and the Indians escaped with a 21-20 win over rival Ord.
The Indian defensive motto was "bend but don't break" last Friday night.
Ord was able to use a strong running attack in the first quarter and controlled the line of scrimmage. However, the young Indian defense held their own and forced Ord to punt after holding onto the ball midway through the first quarter. Special teams came up huge when senior Nate Hanson recovered a blocked punt and raced down the field and scored a 40-yard touchdown and put Broken Bow up early.
Hanson's touchdown was the only score by either team in the first quarter and Broken Bow went into the second quarter holding on to a 7-0 lead.
In the second quarter Ord was able to find pay dirt as Nick Valla scored from nine yards out and evened the game at 7-7.
The Broken Bow offense responded as sophomore quarterback Marcus Miller hit Hunter Campbell for a 45-yard touchdown almost halfway through the second quarter.
Going into half-time the Indians led 14-7.
In the second half both teams went back and forth on offense before Ord quarterback Geoff Foth scored from nine yards and tied the game at 14 apiece. With less than one minute remaining in the game Ord drove the ball down to the Broken Bow 20-yard line with three seconds to go in regulation.
Ord decided against kicking the field goal and threw the ball in the back of the end zone and Hunter Campbell came from his safety spot and knocked down the potential game-winning touchdown and forced overtime.
Broken Bow elected to play defense first. Foth put the Chanticleers on the scoreboard with a seven-yard run. However, McCullough was able to get his hand on the ball during the extra point and Ord led 20-14.
The Broken Bow offense was able to get the ball to the Ord two-yard line and forced a fourth down. McCullough scored from two yards out and Johnson knocked in the extra point.
"Three turn-over’s including a blocked punt returned for a touchdown and a PAT block enabled us to overcome Ord's offense," Head Coach Mike Garner said.
Broken Bow is now 1-1 on the season and has a bye week before hosting Ogallala in a non-district game next Friday at Mark Russell Field.
