Leola Carlson age 82, died Dec. 5, 2011, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island. Memorial services were Saturday, Dec. 10, at Apfel Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Bradenberg officiating. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.
She was born Sept. 18, 1929 at Sargent, to Harry and Tressie (Dutton) Tyson. One of seven children, she grew up in Broken Bow, Fremont, and rural Custer County in Nebraska. She graduated from Broken Bow High School where she lived and worked at Baker's Photography Studio and Gambles. She moved to Fremont in the spring of 1949, where she worked at O.P. Skaggs. She married Roland Carlson in Scottsbluff, Sept. 27, 1949. They made their home in Bridgeport, where her husband worked as a Telegraph operator for the Burlington Railroad. In January 1950 they moved to Omaha and resided there until the fall of 1950 when they settled down in Grand Island. Leola worked at Ernst Bakery and then became a stay at home mother to their eight children.
She had a special affection for babies and devoted her life to her children and grandchildren, singing, playing games with her children and grandchildren as well as providing a safe welcome place for all their friends. There was always room for one more at her house, everyone was welcome. She enjoyed bowling and was an avid reader. She enjoyed trips, to see and attend their grandchildren's programs, sporting events, confirmations, graduations and weddings.
Because of poor health, she became a resident of Wedgwood Care Center in January 2008.
She is survived by her husband Roland of Grand Island; son Scott of Grand Island; daughters Elaine Steinbeck and her husband Kenneth of Grand Island; Janet Miller and her husband Lonnie of Scottsbluff; Linda Fowler and her husband Leonard of Kearney; Debra Carlson of Lincoln; Mary Walker and her husband Clay of Prairie Village, Kansas; and Carol Haas and her husband Dan of Omaha; sisters Susan Campbell of Hastings; Ila Mae Scherer of Grand Island, and her brother-in-law Jerome Weiss of Grand Island; grandchildren Paul Steinbeck and his wife Candice of Syracuse, NY; Laura Johnson and her husband Josh of Grand Island; Diane Mikkelson and her husband Eric of Lincoln, Shari Samuels and her husband Tom of Bozeman, MT; Zach Fowler of Aurora; Dustin Albers of Chicago, IL; Cole & Avery Walker of Prairie Village, KS; Tyler & Jay Haas of Omaha; Steven Comeau of Grand Island; and Ali Meister of Grand Island; great- grandchildren Chance and Tasha Mikkelson of Lincoln and Cayden Johnson of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son David, brothers Darwin and Dale; sisters Helen Weiss and Roxie Jones and her husband Merle; and brother-in-laws Clyde Campbell and Frederick Scherer.
