Gene T. Jeffries, age 84 of Fremont, died May 4, 2012 in Fremont.
He was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Palisade, to Ivan McKinley and Ruth Charity (French) Jeffries. Gene lived in Missouri, Colorado and Nebraska as his father searched for work during the Depression Years. He was baptized into the Church of Christ at the age of 13 in Worthinbgton, Mo.
Gene and Edith Rose Anderson were married in Wauneta, Dec. 5, 1948. They spent their honeymoon stranded at his family’s home by the blizzard of ’48-’49. October 3, 1950, they became the proud parents of Judith Ann Jeffries.
Gene was an avid gun enthusiast and enjoyed being outdoors hunting, trapping and fishing. He enjoyed reading greatly, especially the western novels by Louie Lamour and Zane Grey.
In 1962, he became a game warden based in Broken Bow. While on duty in 1976 he was involved in a serious car accident that resulted in a badly fractured leg. Gene was a game warden for 19 years. He worked at Gibson’s Discount Store and then became a radio dispatcher for the Broken Bow Police Department.
Gene was a National Rifle Association member most of his life. He was a founding member and the 1st President of Mid Nebraska Rifle and Pistol Club. He taught his wife, daughter, and grandchildren how to shoot.
Gene and Edith celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec. 5, 1998. Gene had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to play practical jokes on his family. Telling jokes was another favorite past-time. He also had a heart of gold and was always willing to help out a friend.
He took loving care of Edith as her health declined, and was always at her side. After her death May 20, 2003, he took comfort in the companionship of his family and friends and spent much time playing checkers on the internet and forwarding jokes to everyone on his list.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Ruth; his wife Edith; his daughter and son-in-law Judith and Robert Geiger; his sisters, Gladys Weskamp and Ruth Fauneal Miller.
He is survived by his granddaughter, Melissa Geiger Williamson and her husband Bruce Williamson, and their son Derek of Fremont; grandson Jordan Geiger and his wife Allie of Omaha, and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for both Gene Jeffries and Judith Geiger was Saturday, May 12 at Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home in Wahoo. Gene’s Inurnment was at Palisade Cemetery, Palisade. Judith’s inurnment was at Kearney Cemetery in Kearney. Memorials are directed to the family for later designations.
