The year 2012, marks the centennial of the Custer County Courthouse. In August, a big centennial celebration was hosted by the county, and just this week the final step in the centennial celebration - the burial of a time capsule - took place.
A committee was organized about a year ago to work out the details of the time capsule. Items, depicting what the county was like in 2012, were gathered to be placed in the capsule. It is hoped that during the bicentennial year, 2112, the capsule will be dug up and opened.
The time capsule was buried on the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn, where it is marked with an engraved granite stone donated by Palmer Monument Company. The capsule itself was designed and built by the Custer County Highway Department. Employees of the highway department also did the digging to bury the capsule Tuesday afternoon.
