Edward T. (Sonny) Spanel was born June 23, 1933, to Ernest H. and Frances (Rich) Spanel of Anselmo.
Sonny passed away Feb. 9, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. Except for two years spent in the Army he lived his life on the family farm seven miles east of Anselmo.
May 8, 1954, he married Erma Rae Cool of Callaway. To this union three children were born.
He loved his farming, ski trips to Colorado, square dancing, and restoring his antique vehicles. Many winters were spent in the shop with never ending projects and neighbors who stopped by to visit. Sonny was always looking for a good reason to stop working and visit and to share a soda pop.
Sonny was a familiar sight at many of the local car shows and parades with his cars and tractors. He enjoyed the many students he met while driving bus for Anselmo-Merna. He watched as they matured into young adults and started families of their own.
Sonny also spent some of his recent retirement years working for Richard's Electric along side his son Doug, building substations and airport lighting. Although part time work, it was truly enjoyable and satisfying.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Erma Rae; son, Charles E. (Linda) Spanel of Lincoln; daughter, Mary E. (Randy) Leiser of Grand Island; son, Douglas E. Spanel of Anselmo; sister, Patricia (Gary) Winchester of Anselmo; sister-in-law, Carol Spanel of Broken Bow; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Naylor, and one brother, Paul Spanel.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Govier Brothers Chapel with Pastor Dale Coates officiating. Interment will be at Victoria Springs Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Anselmo Fire Department or the donor’s choice.
