Twin Loup vs. South Loup is always a heavyweight fight where both teams can win the game by grinding it out.
This year, there was a slight twist as Twin Loup used a bit of trickery to help get the 25-15 victory.
In the final minutes of the first quarter, Twin Loup quarterback Jack Gibbens pitched the ball out to Dexter Griebel, who the launched a 41-yard pass to Brayden Davis, who took it in for the touchdown.
The score extended the Wolves lead to 18-7 to end the first quarter.
"We worked on that play," Twin Loup coach Mike Kozeal said. "One of our strengths is that we have diversity, we aren't relying on just one guy."
South Loup answered back in the third when Eamon Schwarz connected with Colter Glendy on a six-yard touchdown pass. They converted the two-point conversion to drive within a field goal at 18-15, but another long touchdown reception brought in by Griebel set up a Gibbens six-yard touchdown run to make the score 25-15 with just over five minutes left.
The Wolves defense came up big on the next drive as Ethan Gibbens and Dakota Divine came up with sacks and the defense forced a South Loup fumble before they were forced to punt it away. That allowed Twin Loup to run out the clock.
Jack Gibbens went 4-7 through the air for 106 yards and had 47 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushing attempts.
Chett Hinton powered the ground game with 175 yards on 27 carries and scored one touchdown. Griebel had three receptions for 98 yards while Davis finished with two receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.
With every South Loup response, Twin Loup had yet another answer.
"The good thing about this group of kids is that we have a lot of upperclassmen," Kozeal said. "They've stayed together and decided to make a big improvement from last year. It shows a lot about their character."
For South Loup coach Andy Schwarz, it was another hard-fought game for his undersized unit.
"There's a lot of fight in them and a lot of pride in them," Schwarz said. "They aren't going to give up.
South Loup finishes the season at 3-5, which will be good enough for a road playoff game and Twin Loup ends the season at 7-1, they will have the opportunity to host a playoff game.View more articles in:
