Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.
Broken Bow was a mix of both in a 22-14 win over Grand Island Central Catholic Thursday night.
Broken Bow took a 20-0 lead into the half on the strength of two touchdowns from Zac Jones including an 83-yarder at the end of the first quarter and one touchdown from Jeremy Christner.
The Crusaders fought back in the second half with a touchdown drive then a fumble recovery for a touchdown to end the third quarter and cut the score to 20-14.
Broken Bow drove back down the field in the fourth quarter and went for it on 4th and goal from the four. They were denied and GICC took over on downs.
On their first play from scrimmage they ran a pitch play into the endzone and the ballcarrier slipped, resulting in a safety and allowing the Indians to hang on for the victory.
While the play may have been a stroke of luck, Broken Bow did plenty to put themselves in that position up until that point.
"We have kids with a lot of character," Broken Bow coach Mike Garner said. "Some of these kids have had to learn how to deal with adversity. I think it shows in those situations. You don't just pack up and go home when things start going in the opposite direction. I think it just really spoke to the character of our kids."View more articles in:
