BROKEN BOW -- Last season Broken Bow and Chadron met in the Class C1 quarterfinals with identical undefeated records. The Indians won the game at Chadron to advance to the Class C1 semifinals. With the realignment of of school classification, the Indians now have Chadron on their regular season schedule.
Heading into last Friday night’s match up, both teams again met with identical records. This time, both teams entered the game with 1-2 records and both desperately seeking their second win of the season. On this night, it was Broken Bow who, once again, prevailed as the victors.
The game between the Indians and Cardinals turned out to be a game of big plays both on offense and defense.
The Indians were the first to score with a big play when running back Justin McCullough raced down the east sideline for a 32-yard touchdown. Tanner Johnson’s PAT kick was good giving the Indians the early 7-0 lead.
The Cardinals countered Broken Bow’s big play with a long run of their own. Chadron’s Wyatt Blome scored from 51 yards but the PAT kick missed. The Cardinals trailed the Indians at the end of the first quarter 7-6.
In the second quarter, the Indians began to take control of the game scoring two touchdowns before the half. The first was a 30-yard option keeper by quarterback Nathan Scott who tip-toed the sidelines into the end zone. Johnson’s PAT kick was good for a 14-6 Indian lead. The second was a 3-yard blast up the middle into the end zone by McCullough. Johnson’s third PAT kick was good and Broken Bow went into halftime with a 21-6 lead.
In the second half, the Indians continued to score with big plays. In the third quarter, Scott scored on 33-yard option keeper which looked like a replay of his touchdown in the second quarter. Johnson’s PAT kick was good and the Indians led 28-6. In the fourth quarter, it was McCullough who crossed the goal line for another big play touchdown for the Indians. This time, McCullough took the handoff and sprinted 39 yards down the west sideline for his third touchdown of the game. Johnson’s fifth PAT kick was good giving the Indians a comfortable 35-6 lead.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Chadron scored their second and final touchdown when Austin Danielson caught a 44-yard pass from Brady Roes. The PAT attempt was no good and the Indians led 35-12.
With time running down in the fourth quarter, head coach Mike Garner substituted his junior varsity squad in for the varsity squad. The junior varsity did not show any let down as they to were score on a big play. Quarterback Marcus Miller broke free on an option sweep and ran 26 yards to the end zone for Broken Bow’s final touchdown. Grayson Minnick added the PAT kick making the final score 42-12.
Although the Cardinals scored on two big plays, the Broken Bow defense pressured Chadron’s quarterback most of the game with many Indians recording tackles for loss.
Defensively, Scott led the Indians with 18 tackles followed by McCullough with 10, Tyler Kozisek with eight tackles and an interception and Adam Pracht with eight tackles two of which were for loss. Nate Hanson, Wilson Baker, Jake McCormick, Derek McCormick and Nate Evans each recorded a tackle for loss as well.
Coach Garner said that the Indians executed much better offensively than they did against Ogallala. One statistic that Coach Garner believes is not mentioned enough is penalties.
“We had half the number of penalties against Chadron than we had against Ogallala, and no offside penalties on our defense,” said Garner.
“Defensively, while I was not happy with the number of passing yards that we gave up, the more important thing is that we were able to prevent Chadron from ever really driving the field, at least against our varsity,” said Garner.
The Indians evened their record at 2-2 after their Homecoming win. The Indians are currently sitting in second place in the district with all four games remaining against district opponents. This Friday night, the Indians will host an 0-4 Ainsworth team that Coach Garner sees as a ‘trap’ game.
“Ainsworth has not had a very successful season so far this year, but they are good enough to beat us if we aren’t able to maintain focus,” said Garner. “We seem to be getting closer to being the kind of team that we all thought we would be, so hopefully that will continue.”
